NEWSLETTER Term 3 Week 8

Kaya, Wanjoo Parents & Carers,

It’s hard to believe that we are nearly at the end of Term 3, and what an exciting term it has been. Our Book Week parade was fabulous. It was great to see so many of our staff and students join in the fun and celebrate our love of books and our joy of reading.

We have also had a successful K-Yr. 6 Athletics Carnival where students completed their Athletics Carnival jumps and throws, running and team events. This carnival is carefully planned and enables an enjoyable physical education experience for all students. It helps build a school community and encourages student participation and team work. I was proud of the way our students cheered their team on and their positive and encouraging support throughout the day.

It was great to see so many families join us on our Athletics Carnival Day. All staff worked tirelessly to make sure this was a successful day. Special thanks to Mr Devlin, Mr D, Mr Nicholas and Mrs Whyte for working behind the scenes ensuring that everything was so well organised.

As you walk around our school, you may have seen our Bush Tucker Garden. Ms Eades, Mr Casey, the Binar Futures group and our students, are busy planning and creating a meaningful connection to place-based pedagogy, allowing students and educators to learn about their local community, ecosystems, and Indigenous knowledge systems.

The Bush Tucker Garden now has a yarning circle, and posts coloured to represent the 6 seasons. Our Aboriginal students, with Binar Futures will be researching and planting bushes and plants to represent each season. Bush food has sustained generations of Aboriginal peoples for centuries and today represents a rich and vibrant history in the culture of this land. The Binar Futures team visit our school each Thursday afternoon and connect with our Aboriginal students. Binar is the Noongar word for meteor – when the Spirit Mother’s children on Earth are in need of help, she sends her star children home in the form of meteors. Their mission is to engage Aboriginal youth, promote healthier lives, and develop more resilient and empowered young people who can build positive futures.

On Wednesday we had our School Fete run by the students from room 11 and 12. This popular event is a great way for our students to develop their entrepreneurial skills and raise money for the year 6 end of year celebration. Thank you to all those families who were able to donate.

We also had an evacuation drill on Thursday. In the event of an emergency, it is important that staff and students know how to exit the buildings safely. All schools have emergency evacuation plans, and the drill helps us to support students and staff, in the unlikely event that there was an emergency at school. The plan was explained to the students by their classroom teacher prior to the drill so that they were informed and understood why we have a drill and what procedure we follow.

Our Interschool Athletics carnival is happening today and I’m sure that all participants have represented Kingsley Primary School proudly.

Our school is participating in the exciting WA MASSED CHOIR FESTIVAL on Tuesday 23 September. Thank you to Mrs O’Neill and our wonderfully musically talented students. I’m really looking forward to seeing and hearing you all.

Thank you everyone for your ongoing support of KPS

Faction Carnival Highlights

Staff v Students Tug of War Showdown

What a battle! The year 6’s took on the teachers in the ultimate Staff v Students tug of war at our faction carnival…. And came out on top!! With grit, determination, and plenty of team spirit, the students DEMOLISHED the staff, even forcing Mr Devlin to jump in as back up. But not even the extra muscle could save the teachers – Sorry Mr Nicholas, we hope the ground was soft!

The roar of victory was deafening as the students jumped and cheered, celebrating their hard earned win. A huge congratulations to our unstoppable Year 6’s – The bragging rights are officially yours…… Until next year.

Kingsley Choir

“Singing in a group/choir creates a strong sense of belonging and community. Choral singing improves concentration and memory by requiring attention to details like the conductor, listening to others, and reading music.”

This is why Kingsley Choir each year gets involved in the Massed Choir Festival. We learn amazing repertoire -this year’s for example, everybody wants to rule the World-Tears for Fears; I’m still Standing-Elton John; Believer-Imagine Dragons. There are songs that are especially commissioned for the Massed Choir Festival. Songs about the history of Western Australia, songs that have an Australian feel to them like Our Home Australian, Dots on the Sand and songs I sing for you. Our concert night this year is on Tuesday 23rd September. We will be on the stage with 12 other schools, close to 600 students.

The Kingsley Choir is from Year 4-6, and we practice in the afternoon once a week. In the past we have performed songs at our Choir Assembly, Book Awards and an Open Night.

Kingsley String Ensemble

Under the conductorship of Heather Connan, this year’s Kingsley String Ensemble are making amazing progress. With the National Anthem Advanced Australia Fair being played at Assemblies, to beautiful strings sounds of Sunrise at Kakadu. The String Ensemble consists of Violins, Cellos and Double Bass. The string students each week get lessons from Instrumental Music School Services. Mrs Heather Connan is the violin and ensemble teacher. Mr Kevin Gilliam is cello teacher and Mr Steven Richards is the double bass teacher. Lots of wonderful opportunities come learning a string instrument, joining the Kelmscott Senior High School Junior Orchestra, playing at assemblies, school concert Term 4 and being able to audition to the Music Program at Kelmscott Senior High School. Plus, the amazing repertoire of music we learn, which includes Christmas Carols and Noongar Songs: Koort Boodja & Nija Noongar Boodja Koort.

Thank you to Kingsley String families for their continued support of their child/ern. For encouraging them to practice at home & getting them to ensemble on a Friday, many thanks.

With Musical Warmth,

Mrs Mary-Carmel O’Neill

Room 1’s Counter Colour Investigation

We’ve been learning about how to collect data and make graphs. After practicing on paper, we decided to do a real-life investigation using coloured counters.

We split into groups and each group took some counters to sort and count. After counting the different colours, we compared our results.

We found that in every group, green was the colour we had the most of!

It was fun collecting data ourselves, and now we’re ready to turn our results into graphs to show what we found.

Kind Regards, Carina Ward

Lost Property

We currently have many lost property items we would like to reunite with their rightful homes. Please take a moment to view the photos below and collect anything you believe belongs to your family as these items will be cleared at the end of the term. The lost property is located outside the office. A friendly reminder to please label all items coming to school clearly with child’s name.
