Students Behaviour, Affirmation Levels and Medallions (Year 1 to 6)
At Kingsley Primary School we value excellent behaviour and attendance. Excellent behaviour at school allows students to learn and teachers to teach. Students can concentrate on their lessons and so can their classmates. Regular attendance is also very important, and students should be aiming to maintain an attendance rate of 95%. If a student has an attendance rate of 75% across their primary school years, by the end of year 6, they will have missed the equivalent of two years of primary school.
One of the systems that we use for encouraging excellent behaviour and attendance is the Affirmation system. Students, in year 1 to 6, receive one point for every day that they attend school and demonstrate excellent behaviour (do not receive a warning in the classroom Behaviour Book). The Behaviour Book tracks good behaviour and attendance as well as students who receive warnings throughout the day.
Affirmation certificates and coloured wrist bands are awarded at assembly when students reach their next affirmation goal. As there are often large numbers of students receiving their award at the same time, names are called and the students stand in class groups, rather than coming out individually.
The Affirmation levels are 40 days – Blue, 80 days – Yellow, 120 days – Green and 160 days – Purple.
In term 3 and 4 there are some early recess and extra play times for students who have reached yellow and then green level. Students are encouraged to wear their coloured wrist bands to show that they have reached yellow and then green level.
Students who reach Purple Level (160 days of excellent behaviour and attendance) in term 4 receive a medallion at the Affirmation Assembly in week 9 of Term 4. Students are encouraged to wear their Affirmation Medals from previous years to the ceremony. It is not unusual for some year 6 students to receive their 6th Affirmation medal at the end of year 6. There are 190 days of school in most school years. More than half of our students
Due to behaviour, attendance, or late enrolments, it is not unusual for students to progress through the levels at different times. Some students may receive their first or Blue level in term 4 because they are new to the school. The staff have discussed whether there should be a way for students who arrive part-way through the year to receive a medallion if their behaviour and attendance is excellent. Currently the staff believe that to earn a medallion the student does need to have achieved the full 160 days of excellent behaviour and attendance to receive a medallion.
