Kaya, Wanjoo Parents & Carers,
Last Monday, our Year 4 students had their PEAC testing, and our Year 3 and 5 students have received their NAPLAN reports. The way the NAPLAN reports have been changed is intended to offer a clearer view of whether a student is meeting expectations for their stage of schooling. There has been a significant change in the grading system aimed at providing greater insights for teachers and support staff to target learning and ultimately improve student outcomes. As with all assessment we ask students to try their best. We discuss “positive results” and “what we can improve on”.
Thank you to all our teachers, and education assistants, for their outstanding dedication to improving student outcomes. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type of test. Individual student performance is measured using four proficiency levels for each assessment area and year level. It is a valuable tool that can give us insights into a student’s performance, but it is not a single measure of ability. At KPS we have a whole school system regarding assessment practices. In this way, we capture the whole child in their learning journey.

Professional Learning is an important part of our school planning when building teacher efficacy. Four staff members are attending the Teach Well professional learning this year. This means that as a whole school we are nearly at 100% course completion rate. An amazing effort. In the program teachers are learning to improve instruction and provide students with the opportunity to learn more effectively. This academic system enables teachers to collaborate with each other and develop and practise new methods of instruction that are based on evidence-based research.
This is an explicit direction whole-school approach, where the process:
· Decides the learning intentions and success criteria
· Makes the intentions and criteria transparent to students
· Evaluates if students understand what they have been told by checking for understanding
· Retells students what they have been told by tying it all together with closure.
This is endorsed by the Department of Education through the Teaching for Impact Strategic Direction for Public Schools
Last Thursday, we held a staff vs students soccer game, and it was great fun. The students did themselves proud, but this year the trophy went to the staff who won the game 2-1
Our famous KPS Book Week parade is on next week and together we celebrate the joy of reading and engaging our students with books and characters in a fun way. The students express their creativity through their costumes, making it an enjoyable experience for all.

Interschool Cross-Country Carnival
On the Friday of Week 9 last term, we took our Cross-Country squad to compete in the Interschool Cross-Country Carnival held at Gwynne Park Primary School.
All of our students demonstrated outstanding effort, resilience, and sportsmanship throughout the day. We are incredibly proud of each and every one of you!
A special congratulations to Ayuub, who placed fourth in the Senior Boys. An impressive achievement, especially as a Year 5 student. Well done, Ayuub!

Staff V Student Soccer
The Staff v Students soccer showdown was once again a highlight of the week with plenty of friendly rivalry, fancy footwork & plenty of cheering from the sidelines. Both teams brought their A-Game. In a close match the staff claimed a 2-1 victory, but the real win was the laughter, sportsmanship & school spirit on display. A huge thank you to everyone who played, cheered and supported.

Lion’s Eye Screening
Last week we were extremely fortunate to have the volunteers from the Lions Eye Institute test the vision of our students.
They completed four tests, including Visual Acuity, Depth Perception, Colour Blindness and Spot Vision Screener.
Out of the 163 students who were tested, 49 have been recommended for follow-up testing with an optometrist.
For those parents who signed the consent form to have your child’s eyes assessed, you will receive your results next week.
Kind regards,
Tracey Walker
Learning Support Coordinator
